Is that a giant daggerboard on t he side? It looks like there might be a matching one on the other side. It doesn’t look look long enough to reach the water. WHAT IS IT?!??!?

If I remember correctly it was some kind of downrigger? They’d drop down in deep water to offset the shallow draft river boats.
Went to the Amsterdam Nautical museum but wasn't very sober. So my data is suspect.

That is a leeboard. When the boat is sailing, it heels (tilts) away from the wind. The leeward side of the boat is lower in the water, and the leeboard acts as the keel.
Having two pivoting leeboards allows the boat to sail in sallow water (both leeboards up).

Excellent! Similar to the daggerboards on a catamaran, but a single hull and cartoonishly large!

downriggers are for fishing. These are like a retractable centerboard, but on the sides.called a leeboard
